The contact or winding resistance is measured on the principle of voltage drop. A specific DC current is passed through the equipment under test, indicated by the ammeter and the potential drop across the contact / winding is measured by the millivoltmeter. The resistance is obtained by dividing the mV drop by the current. The instrument comprises of a variac, a loading transformer, a rectifier, the ammeter and the milli-voltmeter alongwith necessary terminals and switches, housed in an insulated moulded cabinet.
